Household Remittance Survey in Bangladesh (2008)

 

Specific objectives of the survey were to:

 

  • Determine and detail the patterns and characteristics of remittance transfers to individual households, including average transfer size, frequency, transfer mechanisms, costs, sending and receiving points, characteristics of senders and receivers, etc.;
  • Determine patterns of utilization of remittances among households receiving the remittances; and
  • Understand the impact (both social and economic) of remittances at the household level;

 

The HHRS was implemented by collecting data from a nationally representative sample of 10,565 migrant households. A migrant household was defined as a household that had at least one of its members now living/working abroad. For a distinction, all households together, including both migrant and non-migrant households are referred to as general households. The sample was be drawn in two stages by stratifying the country into 12 strata.

 

The major tasks were carried out in this survey:

  • Recruitment of field personnel
  • Preparation of training plan for field personnel
  • Training of field personnel 
  • Preparation of household listing plan
  • Printing of listing forms, questionnaires and manuals  
  • Conducting of fieldwork for household listing  
  • Preparation of data collection plan
  • Conducting of fieldwork for data collection 
  • Conducting of quality control checks
  • Registration of completed questionnaires/instruments 
  • Developing of data entry program
  • Recruitment and training of data processing personnel/data entry operators
  • Developing of data coding/editing manual
  • Entering of data into computer, and cleaning of data
  • Tabulation of data as per analysis plan
  • Submission of preliminary tables to IOM
  • Preparation of draft report and its submission to IOM and the other stakeholders 
  • Finalization of draft report, and submission of final report to IMO
  • Dissemination of survey findings
