SHOUHARDO II Baseline Survey (Qualitative and Quantitative, 2010)

Project description: The SHOUHARDO II Baseline Survey consists two parts namely quantitative and qualitative. The survey has been designed to ‘Transform the lives of women and men in different PEP households in 11 of the poorest and most marginalized districts by reducing their vulnerability to food insecurity’. The survey also covers to assess the capacity and management system of 172 vulnerable union parishad. The program comprises five strategic objectives (SOs) contributing to the MDGs, Bangladesh’s food security agenda and USAID’s priorities for Bangladesh.

 

Sample design: The sample was drawn in terms of households from the four program regions, in two stages, in eight strata. The regions are Cox’s Bazar, Mymensingh, Rangpur, Sirajganj. The eight strata were created by stratifying a region into two strata, with one stratum consisting of villages covered with the MCHN program and one stratum of villages covered with the PM2A program. Two hundred villages were selected at the first stage, choosing 25 villages from each stratum. The selection of villages from each stratum was made independently with Probability Proportional to Size (PPS) sampling method. Households were selected at the second (final) stage by systematically selecting 44 households from a selected village. The household lists of the selected villages, supplied by CARE office, were used as the sampling frames for the household selections. A total 172 Union parishad were sampled for MSS, 20 (out of 172) union parishad were sampled by systematic way for KII and 16 villages (out of 200) were sampled for FGD as qualitative survey. 16 FGD held from 16 villages, each area (out of 4 areas) 4 FGD, 2 for male and 2 for female considering

 

Tasks carried out: The interviewers, Supervisors, Quality Control Officers are assigned by the tour programs in the specific clusters for data collection activities. The tour program was circulated to all survey concerned personnel and CARE Bangladesh for monitoring the field work of the interviewing teams. The data collection was divided in two parts, namely quantitative and qualitative.

 

Twenty interviewing teams were deployed to carry out the fieldwork. Each team consists of one supervisor, one editor, five interviewers and one field logistical assistant. Field supervisors were responsible for data quality. They checked questionnaires, observed interviews and verified that the sample units were interviewed. Twelve quality control officers and senior professionals of Mitra and Associates visited the interviewers in the field and re-interviewed almost 10 percent of households on random basis to ensure the quality of the data. A total of 8 teams were deployed for conducting the qualitative survey including 6 teams for the MSS and 2 teams for the FGD/KII. Each MSS team consist 2 members, one moderator/interviewer and other is note taker. Each FGD team consist 3 members, one moderator, one note taker and other is organizer. In addition to this 4 quality control officers including one professional staff were employed to oversee the qualitative data collection
