The PURE Air sub-study

Narrative Description of Project: The PURE Air sub-study is a project initiated by McMaster University and supervised by Independent University, Bangladesh. The study will be conducted on a subset of participants from the Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological (PURE) study, a cohort study on cardiovascular risk factors based in 24 countries. The principal PURE study has been approved by BMRC in 2008 (baseline), 2012 (first follow up) and 2015 (second follow up). The purpose of the PURE Air Sub-study is to measure air pollution levels that individuals are exposed to in their homes and communities. We aim to enhance our understanding of the health impacts from long-term exposure to air pollution.

This study will use a subset of the population of the PURE study which has already been approved by BMRC. The PURE study population consisted of adults aged 35-70 years living in urban and rural communities in Manikganj and Dhaka. Two rural communities and one urban community will be selected for this study in which we will select 50 households and 20 participants from each community (150 households and 60 participants in total).

Description of Actual Services Provided by Mitra:

  • Details

Procedures, Methods of data collection: PURE Air study coordinators will visit houses that were selected for household air pollution monitoring to seek consent to participate. We will offer participants an opportunity to voice any questions or concerns, take time to consult others (e.g. family members), or do any other research that would help them understand the study activities before providing consent. If households provide consent, they will be given a monitor to set up within the main living area of their home for a 48-hour period.

The TZOA monitor (or similar instrument) will be used to measure air pollution continuously for a 48-hour period. Monitors will be placed in the main living area of the household but in locations that do not disturb household activities. They will be placed off the floor (approximatly 1.5m), and away (approximately 1.5m) from doors and windows if possible.  After the 48-hour monitoring period, monitors will be collected by study coordinators. Monitors will be re-charged after each household and data uploaded via USB and emailed to IUB using a remote access, password protected server to safety store and retrieve data.

Questionnaires will be provided after the monitoring period to every household involved in the study. The data from the completed questionnaires will be entered into the PURE database.

The TZOA monitor that is used for household sampling (or a similar instrument) will also be used for personal sampling. This will require individuals to clip the additional monitor onto a piece of clothing (e.g. shirt pocket, belt) during the day and place the monitor next to their bed during the night. The TZOA monitor also includes a UV censor and (potentially) an accelerometer and GPS. These measurements will help determine whether the monitors are being worn and the time individuals spend outdoors. These participants will be asked to wear a personal monitor for a 48-hour period.

Questionnaires will be provided after the monitoring period to every individual participant receiving a wearable monitor. The data from the completed questionnaires will be entered into the PURE database.

Pretesting: A pilot study will be conducted among 10-20 respondents to explore the feasibility and acceptability of the interview, the informed consent clause and to test the study logistics.
